SOME AT-HOME ACITIVTIES TO BUILD MOTOR SKILLS

Gross motor skill-builders:

Make a masking tape path for your child to walk on (jump on, hop on) from one room in your home to another

Play hopscotch

Let your child set up pillowcase path from the bathroom to his/her bedroom; after brushing his/her teeth, your child can jump from pillowcase to pillowcase until he/she jumps right into bed!

Let your child play "Ball on the Wall" with a soft ball (Nerf); the child tosses the ball underhand against the wall and then tries to catch it on the rebound (This is also fun to do with a harder ball against concrete/brick wall)

Compliment your child for every toss he/she catches when playing ball toss with him/herself for a short period of time (Variation: use a bouncing ball, and score a reward for every bounced ball that is caught)

Play a family game of "Hot Potato" with a Nerf ball, a real potato, or a wadded-up pair of socks!

Fine motor skill-builders:

Buy some sidewalk chalk and let your child brighten up your walkway on a damp, cloudy day.

Cut out the picture from the front of a cereal box, punch holes all around it and give your child a shoelace to "sew" around the edges of the cardboard picture.

Play a "Follow the Path" game with your child: each of you has a different colored pen, pencil, or marker. You draw a road or path, and your child's pen gets to be the car that drives along the road.

Give your child junk mail and a pair of scissors and let him/her snip away!

Give your child toothpicks with a lump of play dough and watch him/her create birthday cakes and porcupines. (Variation: Marshmallows and toothpicks make great (edible!!) space ships!)

Find a patient grandparent to teach your child to tie his/her shoes!
